The final due date is June 15 at 11:59 PM HOL time. After this final date I am unable to accept any more homework.
In order to submit the work, please send your answers to [email protected] with the Subject “Dystopia - Assignment 3 - HOL Name”, replacing the 'HOL Name' with your own. For example, if I were turning homework in, the subject of my email would say "Dystopia - Assignment 3 - Elena Galatas". I would prefer that you submit your homework and extra credit in one email; I'd rather not have to sift through multiple emails as that can get incredibly confusing when trying to keep track of points. Please put your HOL name and house at the very top of the body of your email.
As stated before, there are more than 60 points available, but you will only be graded on the first 60 points submitted. If you rely on assistive technology or have any other needs that should be taken into account, please contact me right away, and we can discuss other options for certain parts of the assignments.
Please upload all graphics to an image-hosting site and send the link with your homework. Do NOT send your homework as an attachment or it will not be accepted!
Fill in the Blank (10 points)

This dress perpetuates a moniker for her that sticks throughout the entire series: “___ ____ __ ____”.
Any child between the ages of __ and __ can apply for ________.
The ____ is considered to be one of the poorest areas within the ____ itself.
___ _______ is located in what used to be the Rocky Mountains, and District 12 is in the ruins of __________.
Real or Not Real (10 points) During the war (and, later on, the rebellion), the Capitol developed a means of memory alteration and fear conditioning called 'hijacking'. They used tracker jacker venom to distort memories and associate them with fear. Much later in the story, this happens to Peeta Mellark. With the help of a few close allies, a game of 'real or not real' was developed to help him distinguish between real memories and those altered by the Capitol. Peeta needs your help now.
Determine whether the following memories are true or false; if the memory is false, provide the correct memory. Write in complete sentences, please.
Peeta's stylist is named Octavia.
Peeta first realized that he was in love with Katniss when he noticed the birds listened to her singing.
When Cato slashed Peeta with his sword, it cut through to the bone of his right leg.
On the train back to District 12, Katniss and Peeta only get closer to each other.
The only reason Peeta teamed up with the Careers was to keep Katniss safe.
A World Beyond Panem (10 points) The world of The Hunger Games presents the idea that the Earth has suffered from climate change, overpopulation, and several destructive wars which resulted in the rise of sea levels and the collapse of modern civilization. Even if the ice caps melted, it would not destroy all civilization. More than likely, it would just isolate the countries even more. Overpopulation could cause the collapse of modern civilization, but that doesn't necessarily mean another smaller civilization didn't pop up in its place like it did in North America with Panem. The novel simply implies that Panem teaches that they are the last remaining civilization. If other civilizations didn't exist, albeit very far away, why would the Capitol feel the need to spend so much time and effort maintaining and developing an active arsenal of nuclear weapons/capabilities if they didn't have any enemies? One could argue that they're simply "preparing" for the event of another rebellion, but could there be more to it?
So what do you think happened to the rest of the world? Do other countries/smaller civilizations exist? Do they know what's going on in Panem? How would you react if you were living in another country?

Tracker-Jacker Attack (15 points) Oh no! You've been attacked by the Capitol's genetically engineered wasps! As you well know, one or two stings can cause powerful hallucinations, but several can lead to death, and these suckers follow their 'targets' far from their nests. How would you get away from the tracker jackers? How would you work to heal the stings?

Gamemaker for A Day (30 points) In setting up The Hunger Games, creating the arena was one of the most important parts. There was the terrain, the climate, the animals, and all the potential dangers that could be put into the arena. Choose at least two of the four aspects I mentioned, though you may choose all four (or any other aspects you may think would be an interesting addition), and tell me what kind of arena you could create. Try to keep in mind the fact that many of the people watching the Games demand to be entertained; for many Gamemakers, the creative process begins with the thought "the bloodier and more dangerous the better".
In order to get full marks, please write no less than 300 words total. In case of graphics, please write a short blurb of at least 150-200 words about what it is you created. If you need help with inspiration, this page could be a little useful to give ideas of what had been used in the past.
Stylist for the Capitol (20 points) The Tribute Parade was a very important event in the time leading up to the Games. It was a chance for the tributes to make an impression on the citizens of the Capitol, attracting potential sponsors for their time in the Games, and it was the first time that the citizens of the Capitol got to physically see the tributes in person. Choose one of the districts to represent and design a costume to represent your district in the Tribute parade.
Please limit the size of the graphic to a 600x600 image, though if you'd like to include more than one graphic (perhaps one for the main costume and another for the accessories) that is perfectly fine. Alongside the graphic(s), include a short blurb of at least 50-100 words about your district's costumes.
Crossing the Arena (20 points) While in the Games, crossing the arena can be one of the most dangerous things for a Tribute. Luckily, this crossword shouldn't be quite as dangerous! All of the answers can be found within the lesson. Click the image to be taken to a larger version of the puzzle.

A Watchful Eye (20 points) Given how much information I gave on the first novel in The Hunger Games series, you have enough information now to be able to compare the novel to the corresponding film. Watch the first film and tell me what you think about it; using the 'book to film differences' page as a reference may help a bit if you haven't actually read the novels before. How does it compare to what you know about the novel? Is it fairly accurate? Is it just horribly off-kilter? What would you have done differently? Are there any scenes you would have included that weren't? Any you would have left out? Keeping in mind that I left out a few things, feel free to include your reactions to these things.
In order to receive full marks, please write no less than 200 words.
